Okay so who here does NOT know what a DEEPFAKE video is?
SO: deepfake videos (use artificial intelligence to) make it look like someone is saying or doing something that they never said or did
Some deepfakes are fun, and funny – like sticking Nicholas Cage’s face into a movie he never acted in
Most of them are pretty nefarious
with 96% of deepfakes online consisting of INVOLUNTARY PORNOGRAPHY – which swaps the face of Scarlett Johansson or Daisy Ridley into a PORN film she / was never in
AND if we’re already where we’re at with fake news and political misinformation, when deepfakes get thrown into the mix, you can just imagine the even DARKER turns things can take….

Imagine Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh holding a press conference to take responsibility for the lack of moral courage with which he responded to the sexual allegations against him
Imagine propagandist Alex Jones going on Joe Rogan's show to really RECKON with his spread of hateful conspiracy theories
Imagine Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg streaming a message from home to his employees / where he confronts the disastrous consequences of his techno-utopianism — in a way that, if HE were to watch it, would move him to say now THAT is the me I want to be.

Remember Reckonings episode #22 — the imaginary reckoning with Pope Francis?
The Pope hadn’t called me to come on Reckonings, so I thought, why not write his reckoning for him, and have a voice actor perform it?
(And then AMAZINGLY heard from survivors of clergy sex abuse who found it really helpful to hear the imaginary Pope say the kinds of things they’d love to hear the real Pope say?)
Well anyways, that was an AUDIO prototype for something that for a LONG TIME I’ve been wanting to do with SYNTHETIC VIDEO
Which is: use synthetic VIDEO to take Reckonings in a FICTIONAL direction
And: I have finally done that :)
And: part of the reason episodes have been so intermittent is because…well…I’ve been working on THAT, and it’s finally….DONE
So you can now WATCH Brett Kavanaugh, Alex Jones, and Mark Zuckerberg having what I call: DEEP RECKONINGS

It is ABSOLUTELY explicit that the videos are fake, and the question I’m exploring is: how might we use our synthetic selves to elicit our better angels?

I do know that Christine Blasey-Ford has endured a tremendous amount of pain over the course of her life. And I know that I responded to her allegations with defensiveness, partisanship, and a disregard for the public good — which only exacerbated her pain, along with that of my family, and that of our country.
IMAGINARY JONES
You know I got into all of this because of real conspiracies. I wanted to expose lies and seek the truth and fight tyranny! That's why I investigated Bohemian Grove and the Council on Foreign Relations and….but then it turned into Sandy Hook being a hoax and Pizzagate and everything — everything became a conspiracy! And people started believing me and…sending me evidence, and InfoWars got huge, and it's like…I said I was David fighting Goliath, but I just became Goliath.
IMAGINARY ZUCKERBERG
The difference between the way I see Facebook and the way other people see Facebook has gotten too big to ignore. I've been treating Facebook's problems as the result of bad actors exploiting our supposedly neutral platform, instead of as structural flaws inherent to the platform. I've been refusing to see Facebook's negative impacts clearly, which is necessary to making Facebook better. I believed so hard that we were being the change we want to see, that I denied the ways in which we weren't. And for that, I'm sorry.
